As the first hints of snow appear on the mountain, and winter gently descends upon the cabin like a soft blanket. It is once again time to drawn closer to the fire, sip on a cup of hot chocolate, and pop in a well-used CD of “Helene Fischer.” Across the room a soft glow in the china hutch illuminates my favorite collection, a miniature world of brightly painted figures, radiant angels, and children of the stars. Each intricate handcrafted piece tugs at the heart, and fills me with memories and thoughts of a simpler time and the magic of childhood. Christmas carols echo through the cabin and I find myself engulfed in a moment of heavenly peace.

Each wonderful piece is handcrafted in Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region of Germany. Originally the people of the area made their living as coal miners, but when the coal deposits gave out they turned to the forests to make a living. Families began making their favorite figures and selling them in their homes or at local Christmas Markets, today they are sold around the world and are sought after collectibles. These fine art miniatures of wood are a perfect addition to any country décor and are sure to become family heirlooms.
