Description
“Joys of the Garden,” part of the Landidyll (Country Life) Collection, brings to mind the little boy who lives down the lane — a lively fellow I’m fairly certain is named Peter. The trouble is no one can quite agree which Peter he is.
At the dinner table, I once asked my nephew if he knew him. “Do you mean Peter?” he said, then launched straight into, “Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater…”
I quickly objected — surely, he’s far too young to be married.
Before I could recover, my other nephew chimed in with, “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…” reciting the whole tongue‑twister without taking a breath.
And then, of course, someone remembered the boy who stuck in his thumb and pulled out a plum, proudly declaring, “What a good boy am I!”
By the time my brother arrived to collect his children, the entire table had dissolved into a chorus of Peters. So, by unanimous and somewhat chaotic decision, this cheerful little gardener shall simply be known as Peter — the boy of many rhymes and even more charm.
