Description
Laura takes a walk around the block, proudly showing off the new bundle of joy her mother gave her for her birthday. She carries it with both hands, careful and confident, the way she’s seen the grown‑ups do. As she strolls past the picket fences of Cowboy Creek, she waves to every neighbor she sees — because when you have a new baby, it’s important to introduce them properly.
One neighbor calls out from her porch and invites Laura to sit for a moment and enjoy a glass of lemonade. Laura considers this with great seriousness before asking, “Would you mind watching my baby for me?” The neighbor agrees, of course, and Laura settles into the porch chair with the dignity of someone who has just completed a very important task.
In this tiny scene, you can almost hear the clink of ice in the lemonade glass and feel the warm pride of a little girl learning the art of caretaking.
