The other day, my nephew shared a familiar nursery rhyme: "Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water..." I praised his recitation, thinking that was the end of it-oh, how wrong I was. He tilted his head, deep in thought, and asked, "Why did they go up the hill? Water runs downhill, wouldn't it have been easier to get it down here?" Before I could think of an answer, he launched into his next question: "Do you think he got into the dentist right away?" Confused, I asked, "What does a dentist have to do with the story?" "Well, won't he need to have his crown replaced?" Ah, first graders are impossible to argue with.
