Description
Around Cowboy Creek, Uncle Alan and Aunt Theresa’s garden is the stuff of family legend. Every spring they plant enough tomatoes, carrots, beans, and zucchini to feed the whole clan clear through winter. Some years the zucchini grows so wild you have to peek through the window shades before opening the door — you never know when another “generous offering” of zucchini bread might be waiting on the porch.
But this year, something felt different.
Late one afternoon, the phone rang at the packing shed. Uncle Al’s voice came through, low and urgent: “Something’s wrong at the garden — come quick.” We dropped everything, climbed into the old truck, and rattled down the lane, expecting another zucchini prank.
Instead, he led us to the pumpkin patch.
And there they were — pumpkins unlike any we’d ever seen. Strange faces. Odd shapes. Expressions that looked almost alive. No one knows where Uncle Al got his seeds, but around the Creek, magic has a habit of sprouting where you least expect it.
This vintage‑style Jack‑O’-Lantern looks as though it grew right out of that enchanted patch. Crafted from paper mâché with vellum glow‑through features, it carries the worn, well‑traveled look of something found in an attic trunk — scuffs, blemishes, missing paint, and a rustic wire handle that swings like it’s been carried through many Halloweens.
It’s a little spooky, a little sweet, and entirely at home in the Cowboy Creek harvest tales.
