Memorial Day

Memorial Day

26th May 2016

Each year on the last Saturday of May the entire family gathers here at Cowboy Creek to celebrate the kickoff of summer. There will be stories to tell, and hotdogs to roast over the campfire, and don’t forget the huckleberry pie. Who wants S’mores? There is a parade featuring our local volunteer fire department, kids on bikes, horses and Smoky the Bear, and later a car show.

It is also a time to remember and tell stories of those who are no longer with us and those who gave their lives that we might enjoy the many blessings we have today. With Memorial Day on Monday I was trying to share these feelings with my 3rd and 4th grade students today, and I think it went well. The topic was, “Freedom is…”

“Freedom is waking up on a beautiful spring morning and opening the door to the sweet sounds of birds. Freedom is the ability to feel the soft breeze on my face, and the morning sun on my back.

Freedom is jumping into a freezing lake on a warm summer’s day, or trying to decide which flavor of ice cream to buy at the store. Its knowing that those I love will be here tomorrow and if not that they are embraced by the Great Spirit.

Freedom is the ability to smile when others around you would have you cry.

Freedom is remembering those that have come before and the gifts and sacrifices they have given that we might enjoy the gifts of life. “

Thank you!

On the journey,

Steve
