Description
An all‑American bird, the turkey is woven into our history. Ben Franklin thought so highly of it that he believed it should have been our national symbol instead of the eagle. Wild turkeys can fly short distances, but on the ground they can run up to 25 miles an hour. Only the males make that familiar gobble, and that little flap of fleshy growth that hangs over their beak is called a snood.
Turkeys have been part of the American landscape for millions of years — and they’ve developed a very understandable fear of Thanksgiving. With an average of 525 million pounds of turkey consumed on that day alone, who can blame them.
